Slogging North of 60 by Peter Heebink with Karen McColl.

Slogging is an account of 45 winters of backcountry ski trips in the Yukon and into the Northwest Territories (N.W.T.), British Columbia, and Alaska, which Peter Heebink embarked on with approximately 170 trip partners (not all at once, although that would have been fun). The excursions represent over 15,000 km of travel by skis and snowshoes and 1,500 nights of camping in the snow. Peter and crew followed many historic First Nation routes through mostly untracked wilderness. A huge portion of their travel was on or along rivers and creeks, crossing from one watershed to another over mountain passes. They also did three trips traversing icefields. The majority of the travel took place in the Yukon, as far west as Mount Logan and as far east as the Ragged Range Mountains at the N.W.T. border. North to south, these trips form a near-continuous route from Herschel Island on the Beaufort Sea to Juneau, Alaska.

The first part of this book covers the history of our ski trips and includes sections about trip planning, winter camping gear, logistics, safety, and valuable travel tips. The second part  of the book is comprised of 45 detailed reports and mapped routes.

This 300-page book is available in Whitehorse from Mac's Fireweed Books, Coast Mountain Sports, and Icycle Sports. Readers in southern Canada can order from the Friesen Press Bookstore.
